1. For each video and article list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
The video Aesthetics: Philosophy of the Arts, discusses philosophical theories about aesthetics and art. Most of the theories seemed to be most focused on the "definition" of aesthetics, as well as defining what is "beautiful."The video Evolutionary Origins of Art and Aesthetics takes more of a scientific route, discussing the evolution of the human brain, and in turn its evolution of processing art and aesthetic. The article What The Brain Draws From: Art and Neuroscience, takes another look at how our brains affect the way we process works of art.
2. Which philosopher's theroy on aesthetics do you feel is most important? Be sure to mention the philosphers name, era (time in history), and contribution to the aesthetic theory in your response.
Morris Weitz theory of art, constructed in 1956, claims that there are no specific conditions or guidelines that makes something a work of art, as stated in the video Aesthetics: Philosophy of the Arts. Weitz believes that art cannot, and should not be defined.
3. What do you think about Changeux and Ramachandran scientific view of aesthetics and art? What was the most interesting fact you discovered from each speakers lecture?
Changeux and Ramachandran's lectures make you think about art and aesthetics in a way you usually wouldn't. Compared to the more philosophical theories, these lectures give more concrete "answers," as to why we interpret art and aesthetics the way we do. An interesting fact from Changeux's lecture was aesthetic efficacy and its link with conscious and unconscious processing. Ramachandran discusses the appeal of symmetry in his lecture. He compares symmetry in nature used to detect people, predators, prey, etc., to the symmetry created in art, including monuments.
4. How do the videos and article relate to the readings in the text?
Like the readings in the texts, the videos and article discuss concepts as such, the definitions of art and aesthetics. They look at art and aesthetics in a interpretational and scientific way, to help us better understand why we perceive things the way we do.
5. What is your opinion of the films and article? How do they add depth to understanding of the topics in your reading in the text?
The films and article give present interesting ideas and theories concerning the interpretation of art, and more specifically, aesthetics. The article and films are useful sources to have outside of the textbook. The sources, specifically the films, can make concepts from the textbook easier to understand.
